It was used as calibration standard in analysing volatile fatty acids from faecal samples using GLC and HPLC methods.

General description

Butyric acid is a 4-carbon fatty acid which is a potent differentiation agent for cells and also possesses antiproliferative activity. In cultured mammalian cells it affects growth rate, morphology and gene expression. It also induces apoptosis.
