CD8+ cytotoxic T cells fulfill the dual role of regulating and/or implementing the body’s immune response by eliminating intracellular pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and parasites. Upon recognition of an infected cell, the CD8+ T cell initiates apoptosis through the targeted release of specialized lytic granules within the T cell.
