Biochem/physiol Actions
Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) plays a vital role as a secondary messenger in physiological processes. It is implicated in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, cancer, atherosclerosis and diabetes. S1P regulates skin dendritic cells and keratinocytes
General description
Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a sphingolipid found in yeast, plants and mammals and is produced in endothelial cells. It is a cellular metabolite and signalling lipid in mammalian cells. S1P is synthesized by sphingosine kinases from sphingosine. It is a high affinity ligand for sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor (S1P1-5).
