June Spotlight on Sustainability: Eppendorf CryoCube® ULT Freezers

This month, the Spotlight on Sustainability shines on the Eppendorf CryoCube® F570 Series ULT freezers. Designed with a powerful compressor system, the CryoCube® F570 series ensures rapid recovery to -80°C after door openings, making it ideal for demanding real-lab environments where multiple daily openings are routine. Its dynamic and efficient cooling system provides reliable temperature stability to safeguard valuable samples at all times.

In addition to superior sample protection, the freezer is engineered to minimise operating costs through an advanced insulation combination of vacuum insulation panels and polyurethane foam, delivering exceptionally low energy consumption during long-term storage in the “h” versions.

By combining enhanced sustainable cold storage with secure sample preservation, the CryoCube® F570 series offers laboratories an environmentally conscious solution without compromising performance. This product was awarded 4 out of 5 sustainability attributes.

Key features:

  • Volume class: 570L (20.1ft3), e.g. up to 40,000 samples
  • Temperature range from -50 to -86°C
  • Efficient insulation, composed of traditional insulation ("n"-version) and vacuum insulation panels ("h"-version)
  • Efficient compressor control system reduces cycle times to lower energy consumption and increases freezer longevity
  • Automatic vent port on front door of upright CryoCube® models improves energy consumption and enables fast sample access
  • Lockable main switch to prevent switch-offs by accident
  • Location for chart recorder for data documentation
  • Ergonomic door handle based on Eppendorf PhysioCare Concept® requires less force and provides easier access
  • 5-compartment layout and 5 insulated inner doors for easy sample access and safe sample storage
  • Stainless steel interior for easy cleaning during maintenance and defrost cycles; powder-coated steel exterior
  • Green cooling liquids (R290/R170)

This product was awarded with 4 out of 5 sustainability attributes based on the following criteria:

Sustainable Raw Material

Uses materials which have a reduced environmental impact (e.g. refrigerant with a low global warming potential); Designed to reduce the use of raw materials

Sustainable Product Manufacturing

Made in a facility which runs on >90% renewable energy; Measures were in place during the manufacture of this product to reduce energy consumption

Sustainable Distribution & Packaging

Manufactured in the UK or Ireland; Country of origin has an Environmental Performance Index (EPI) greater than 60; Product reduces need for packaging

Sustainable Use

Product contributes to a reduced energy consumption

Expert advice: Many labs are raising their ULT freezer temperatures from -80°C to -70°C, which on average reduces energy consumption by about 30%. However, this adjustment also shortens the window of time available to respond to a freezer failure. The Eppendorf ULT freezers with high-quality insulation take around 9 hours to warm from -80°C to -50°C (the temperature where samples become biologically active), whereas warming from -70°C reduces this window to approximately 6 hours.
