J-QUANT Nitrate/Nitrite test strips semi-quantitatively measure both the nitrate and nitrite content of aqueous solutions up to 500mg/L of nitrate and 80mg/L of Nitrite.
The UK and EU governments have set a limit for the concentration of nitrate in drinking water as 50mg/L (50ppm). Nitrate can be present in water through the biological breakdown of plant and animal matter, a key part of the nitrogen cycle. High concentrations of nitrate can also be found when nitrate-based fertilisers are used in farming.
To aquatic life, nitrate is much less toxic than ammonia, but still toxic, nonetheless. However, the main concern with elevated levels of nitrate is that it can easily be converted to nitrite, which even at levels of 0.5mg/L (0.5ppm) can be toxic to aquatic life.
Nitrite is very toxic to aquatic life and harmful to humans and is heavily regulated in drinking and processed waters. It is easily converted from nitrate which is a key step in the nitrogen cycle. Elevated levels of nitrite can indicate contamination by microbiological organisms and an inefficiency in the nitrification process of sewage treatment.
