Lugol’s Iodine (for Microscopy) is a specialised aqueous solution of iodine (I2) and potassium iodide (KI)2 developed specifically for microscopy and histological applications. It is commonly used to enhance cellular detail in stained tissue sections and microbial samples. As a mordant in Gram staining, it forms a stable complex with crystal violet, enabling clear differentiation of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This formulation is also effective for removing artefacts from mercurial fixatives and can act as a mild oxidising agent in sample preparation.
- Manufactured in the UK
- Manufactured and bottled using non-toxic, chemical-resistant bottles
- Uses:
- Microscopy and histology: used to enhance contrast in biological specimens, improving visibility of cellular and structural detail in both plant and microbial tissues
- Gram staining: serves as a mordant in the Gram stain protocol, forming an iodine-dye complex that helps differentiate bacterial cell wall types
- Fixative artefact removal: applied to samples treated with mercurial fixatives to reduce artefacts, improving the quality and interpretability of stained sections
- Oxidation reactions in sample prep: functions as a mild oxidising agent during specimen preparation, supporting enhanced staining outcomes and sample reactivity
