Silver nitrate is an important component of the silver staining, which is used for the detection of proteins separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Silver nitrate is required for the image development in diamine as well as non-diamine silver staining. In silver staining, silver ions are reduced to metallic silver, thereby giving metallic silver images.
