Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (Li-OH monohydrate) is prepared industrially by recovering it from spodumene or by evaporating a solution prepared by reacting calcium hydroxide and lithium carbonate. Li-OH monohydrate absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide, forming lithium carbonate.

Li-OH monohydrate may be used as a precursor for the synthesis of various lithium halides and fatty acids (lithium soaps).
