Application
C16 Lactosyl(β) Ceramide (d18:1/16:0) or D-lactosyl-β-1,1′ N-palmitoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine has been used as a lipid standard in mass spectrometry imaging of lipids in human skin disease model hidradenitis suppurativa. It may be used in the preparation of liposomes.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Lactosylceramide (LacCer) is a structural and signaling lipid. It is crucial for signal transduction and cell adhesion. LacCer facilitates microbial attachment and also acts as an adhesion receptor for pathogens. It regulates cellular stress response and apoptosis. LacCer also modulates in cell proliferation and microbial pathogenesis. It is implicated in innate immune responses, host-tissue pathogen interactions and chronic inflammatory diseases.
General description
Lactosylceramide (LacCer) is a glycosphingolipid, which is found majorly in the nervous system and myelin sheath. It comprises a hydrophobicceramidelipid and a hydrophilic sugar moiety.
