July Spotlight on Sustainability: Astell EcoFill Benchtop Autoclave

This July, the spotlight turns to the Astell EcoFill Benchtop Autoclave, an innovation in sustainable laboratory technology. With sustainability at the core of its design, the EcoFill offers a highly energy-efficient solution for sterilisation, combining advanced engineering with practical environmental benefits.

This autoclave features a smart pressure vessel that uses the minimum amount of water per cycle, resulting in significantly reduced energy consumption and faster heating and cooling times. Designed with convenience in mind, the EcoFill requires no mains water supply or drainage, offering a true plug-and-play setup ideal for labs focused on minimising their ecological footprint.

Beyond its performance, the EcoFill has been recognised for meeting stringent sustainability criteria across multiple categories. These include the use of fewer raw materials, low-waste manufacturing processes, UK-based production with an Environmental Performance Index (EPI) above 60, and plastic-free packaging. The product also supports sustainable use, with reduced water and energy demands, a minimum five-year warranty, and servicing options to extend its lifespan. At the end of its lifecycle, the EcoFill can be fully recycled, with a repurposing scheme available.

The Astell EcoFill unit is already making an impact, having been chosen for use at Royal Horticultural Society Hilltop, Wisley. To learn more, explore the product here or read the latest case study highlighting its implementation at one of the UK’s leading horticultural science centres.
