General description
Synaptotagmin-12 (SYT12) , also known as Synaptotagmin-12, Synaptotagmin XII, SytXII, and encoded by the gene SYT12, is an important protein involved in calcium dependent exocytosis of secretory vesicles through calcium and phospholipid binding to the C2 domain and Synaptotagmin-12 may serve as calcium sensors in the process of vesicular trafficking and exocytosis. Synaptotagmin-12 is a synaptic vesicle phosophoprotein that modulates spontaneous neurotransmitter release, but unlike other family members Synaptotagmin-12 differs from classical synaptotagmins in that it does not bind Ca(2+). In synaptic vesicles, synaptotagmin-12 forms a complex with synaptotagmin-1 that prevents synaptotagmin-1 from interacting with SNARE complexes. Synaptotagmin-12 also is an abundant synaptic vesicle protein that is important in LTP transmission. For instance, its phosphorylation by cAMP Protein Kinase is necessary for hippocampal mossy fiber LTP.
